ART

“Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.”

NATIONAL CURRICULUM FOR ART

At Haslington Primary Academy and Nursery, we believe that children should experience a creative curriculum. Art is integrated into our topics each term. For example during the Year 1 ‘All About Me’ topic, the children learnt to draw portraits in the style of Picasso.

Art lessons should build on prior learning, developing skills, knowledge and understanding and all children will have opportunities to:

  • Explore and develop ideas
  • Investigate and make art, craft and design
  • Evaluate and develop work
  • Use their knowledge and understanding

Children from Year 2 upwards will use a sketchbook as part of the curriculum and their role is vital when researching, gathering and exploring ideas. While studying Art the children will learn about these 7 techniques – Drawing, painting, 3D, textiles, printing, collage and ICT.
