MUSIC LEAD: MRS Z HOULSTON

“Music is a universal language which embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.” (National Curriculum for Music)

At Haslington Primary Academy and Nursery, Music is an integral part of our curriculum. We believe strongly in the power of music to enhance creativity and support learning in all subjects. Children are taught Music as part of their class-based learning, and also experience Music through singing in performances and assemblies, weekly singing practices and membership in clubs.

We are lucky to be closely involved with the Love Music Trust, a local charitable organisation that champions specialist music teaching in schools. Through the LMT our children have the opportunity to learn percussion techniques with the incredible Mr Graham Proctor, he has a huge amount of experience in teaching and making drumming enjoyable. Our KS1 children also enjoy learning to play instruments such as the ocarina with Mrs Helen Brown. These lessons are one of the many highlights of the childrens school lives, learning to play as an ensemble and perform to their parents and loved ones.

Our children have performed widely at local high schools, at our village church and at the Cheshire Show. They have also performed alongside the Halle Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester as well as composing, recording and producing their own song on CD.

We also offer individual and small group instrumental tuition through the Music for Schools Foundation.

Currently, Mrs Morris leads our Music Curriculum to ensure that music is taught to all ages and classes across the school.
