EYFS HOMEWORK

CHEYFS HOMEWORK GUIDANCE

When children first start school the idea of homework can be quite daunting. For us, the best piece of homework you can do with your child is the eveyday things that your child will learn from. These include:

  • Teaching them how to dress and undress themselves including zipping coats up
  • Wash their hands after visiting the toilet and before meal times
  • Holding a knife and fork correctly
  • Exporing the outdoors and talking about what you see
  • Learning nursery rhymes
  • Sharing bedrime stories
  • Counting in the enviromment
  • Reading signs
  • Baking

Daily reading
The most helpful thing you can do to support your child’s learning is to read with them at home. We suggest a limit of 10 minutes per day, sharing a book which your child reads to you, with your support if needed, and then discuss. Children in Early Years will bring home books for you to share. Please ensure that these books are always in your child’s bag so that we can read with them in school and change them when needed.

Spelling
When children learn a new sound in our phonics sessions, they will bring home a sound sheet showing how they have learnt the sound, together with suggested words for them to practise reading and spelling. These spellings are not tested as such, but we look for children to use these sounds correctly in their writing. It is vital that they continue to practise every sound regularly so the children become familiar with them and ultimately use them in their reading. Throughout the year, you will be amazed at how many sounds and key words your child learns and this comes from a team effort between home and school.

Maths
Over the course of the year your child may bring home some maths games. This may not be every week but a selection will be sent for you to use. Don’t feel the need to play the game over and over again – just play it once or twice. As a school we are hoping to invest in some new games over the next few months. As the year progresses and your child begins to record their maths more formally, they will have one or two sums to complete at home alongside you – we honestly don’t mind mistakes.

Learning Book
Occasionally, you may be asked to take part in a Learning Book challenge. This could be something like taking a selfie in an outdoor area or sharing some of your maths skills! Keep your eyes open.
